NYCU Sociophonetics Lab

Inspired by Stanford University’s Interactional Sociophonetics Lab, our Sociophonetics Lab is designed to highlight interaction and multimodal data collection. The lab consists of two main areas:
  1. Living-room style space
Furnished with sofas, a television screen, and a small coffee table, this area recreates a casual environment suitable for interactive interviews and the collection of naturalistic speech data.
  2. Recording and experimental space
Equipped with podcast recording facilities (condenser microphones and monitoring headphones), this area supports both podcast production and high-quality recordings of dyadic interactions or solo speech. A Mac workstation is also available for perception-based experiments.

The lab is acoustically treated with double soundproof walls, sound-absorbing panels, wooden flooring, carpets, and partitions, all of which minimize echo and ensure recording quality.

Current projects in the lab are primarily carried out by my advisees, who explore diverse sociophonetic and sociolinguistic questions:
  • Jackson You-Che Chou: Creaky voice and the restrained emotions of gay Christian men
  • Lancy Ting-Wei Hu: Audiovisual cue integration in English pronunciation among deaf speakers in Taiwan
  • Sheng-Chieh Wei: Social evaluation of Indian English among STEM students in Taiwan
  • Stacy Yung-Hui Hua: Semiotic ideologies of the tilde and exclamation mark in computer-mediated communication
